Top Things about Turtle Cove

We have had a truly amazing set of experiences at the MRCI camp at Turtle Cove!  The Forest Conservation program was well run and gave us opportunities to learn, discover and contribute to the future of the forest flora and fauna in Madagascar. It was an experience that we’d recommend to anyone. Here are some of our favourite things about life at Turtle Cove:

1. We slept in open air cabins that sometimes had a fresh breeze and sounds of the ocean waves lapping up against the shore, AND we got to share accommodations with several other (younger) people allowing us to experience a full explosive train wreck of “stuff”.

2. Our meals were mostly fresh food and often featured local fish that was caught daily AND, we got to have nearly unlimited amounts of rice at almost every meal.

3. Our planting projects and data collection were outside, in the forest and very rewarding, AND we were permanently sweaty and dirty with brownish river-water showers to refresh us and hand-wash our clothes.

4. The amazing night-hikes got us outside in the jungle with headlamps to see geckos, chameleons, snakes, frogs and insects that only come out at night, AND since our camp was in the jungle, these critters were often found near and IN our cabins and bathrooms.

5. The ocean water was warm and snorkeling near our camp was very good with sea turtles visible almost every day, AND we got to swim with jelly fish and other invisible stinging creatures.

6. The international volunteer group allowed us to create new friendships with people from all over the world, AND since we got to spend hours with them each day, we are grateful to have been able to get to know everyone so well.

7. The staff, simply put, was amazing and we cannot thank them enough for taking such good care of us! Fedy and Paul, our program staff kept us busy and feeling useful, Estelle and Sandrina were talented cooks who did incredible things with a charcoal stove and the cleaning crew maintained the shared bathrooms in pristine condition. We are so grateful to all of them.
